Potty Training
One of the biggest milestones that your child will acheive within the first 5 years of their life is the ability to use the potty. This is a time of excitement, fear, and hesitation for both you and your child. If you’ve been through this before or if you are just starting this journey for the first time, this question and answer post will help you out.
When should I start potty training?
Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question. Each child is different but it is suggested that you begin potty training between 18 months – 3 years of age.
How do I know if my child is ready to start potty training?
Rest assured, your child will let you know when they are ready to start potty training. You just need to be aware of the signs which include tugging at their diaper when it is wet or full, staying dry for 2 or more hours at a time, when they have a pretty consistent schedule of bowel movements, and sometimes they will flat out ask.
Should I use Pull-ups?
Every parent has different feelings about using pull-ups. Personally I don’t like them. They are too much like a diaper and defeat the purpose. I would recommend using regular “big kid” underwear–preferrably with something that they like on them (i.e. Dora, Cars, Princess, etc.)
I have been trying to potty train my child for months now and she is still having accidents. What should I do?
Potty training doesn’t happen in one day–it can take months and even years for some kids. You need to be patient and accidents are going to happen. It is important to remember not to yell at your child when they do have an accident. This is a new skill that they are learning and it will take time. It’s a lot like learning to walk. Your child will fall several times while trying to walk and you wouldn’t think of scolding them for that would you? Of course not! Think of potty training in the same way.
